Elton John Poses With Rapper Young Thug

Rock icon Sir Elton John has posed with rapper Young Thug amid rumours of an unlikely collaboration.

The odd couple met up in the hip-hop star’s native Atlanta, Georgia on Wednesday (23Mar16), and Young Thug wasted no time in sharing the snaps he took with his idol online.

In one image, posted on Instagram, the veteran singer is pictured wearing a black Adidas tracksuit and sporting a piece of his new pal’s merchandise, a cap with the word “Thugger” emblazoned across the front, as Young Thug smiles widely with his arm draped across Sir Elton’s shoulders.

A second picture features the 68-year-old holding up a Young Thug-branded hooded sweatshirt, which the rapper simply captioned, “Legendary… @eltonjohn”.

The get-together has fuelled speculation the odd couple is working on a song together, after a previous report in Fader magazine suggested the two musicians had spoken to one another in a Facetime video call, and had started making plans to revamp Elton’s 1972 classic Rocket Man. The track would reportedly feature Young Thug singing, instead of rapping.

The tune has yet to surface, but the photos appear to prove the report isn’t so far-fetched.

Young Thug has long expressed his admiration for Elton’s music and his love of space, referencing his interest in his track Power, which features the lyrics, “I’m a rocket, rocket/I can’t stop it, stop it”.

Elton has also taken note of his famous fan, and even checked out Young Thug’s music on Apple’s Beats 1 Radio.

“I love all of that, it’s unexpected,” the singer/songwriter told Noisey when asked to talk about Young Thug’s music.

He even went so far as to compare the rapper to late Beatles icon John Lennon for pushing the envelope creatively, adding, “I remember when Blind Faith came out, with a nude girl and John and Yoko; you had to buy it in a black plastic bag. And you should be able to do things like that but we don’t live in that kind of world anymore.”

If the collaboration is for real, it won’t be Sir Elton’s first foray into hip-hop. He famously teamed up with Eminem to perform Stan at the Grammy Awards in 2001.
