You Am I, Powderfinger, Jet Members Are ARC Supergroup

Davey Lane of You Am I, Darren Middleton of Powderfinger and Mark Wilson of Jet have become the artists also known as Antipodean Rock Collective but don’t look for this supergroup in arenas.

Antipodean Rock Collective (aka ARC) played a cosy, suburban gig in a park in the Melbourne suburb of Carnegie on Sunday night.

Instead of their usual concert or festival crowd this audience was mums and dads with young kids who wandered out of their homes to give the kids a play in the park while they sat around with the esky, the cheese platter and whatever beverage happened to be closest to the refrigerator door as they left the house.

10 years ago Wilson was performing with his band Jet in Canada to a global audience for Live8, the Live Aid sequel. Five years ago Middleton was wrapping up one of the most successful break-up tours Australia has seen when his band Powderfinger did a lap of the Australian map. Just the day before this Davey Lane was the guitar God in the Jimmy Barnes band on the Red Hot Summer tour, after his never-ending juggling of his “real job” guitarist for You Am I.

ARC is a lot of fun and not to be taken too seriously. This is obviously three mates on stage playing homage to Australia’s greatest acts and songs. Well, yes, David Bowie ‘Heroes’ made the setlist but as Davey Lane pointed out to the audience “Bowie did live in Sydney for 10 years”.

The ARC ‘burb show was a surprise, with thanks to Glen Eira Council. The Council does have a live music initiative but for the next show the acts are more aligned to the core audience. Bananas In Pyjamas with perform on a bill with Peanuts with Charlie Brown, Snoopy and Lucy at Princes Park in Caulfield South in February 21, 2016.
