In 1960, Gautier played Conrad Birdie in the original Broadway production of Bye Bye Birdie. In 1967 he played opposite Dick van Dyke in the movie Divorce American Style.

Over the years Gautier had parts in The Patty Duke Show, Gidget and Bewitched but it was the role of Hymie in Get Smart that made him world famous.
