Simon Holmes, the singer and guitarist for The Hummingbirds, has died.

The Hummingbirds formed in Sydney in 1986 and were one of rooArt’s first signings. Their single ‘Blush’ reached no 19 on the Australian chart.

A statement by the Holmes family has been posted at The Hummingbirds Facebook page.

Words cannot express our sadness at having to inform you of the passing of Simon, our father, partner, brother, son-in-law and brother-in-law, bandmate, friend and guiding light. We will communicate more when we feel ready, but appreciate your wishes and prayers as well as your respect for our privacy at the time.

Please keep your focus on his whole life when you speak of him, rather than one moment of his life. And please remember there is a very young child who knows only that her father has died. Further details need to come from the family only.

‘The Dude abides, man.’

After The Hummingbirds break-up Simon Holmes joined Her Name In Lights and released the album ‘Into The Light Again’. He also recorded with his other band Fragile.

The Hummingbirds reformed in 2011 for the Big Day Out in Sydney. There were a number of reunion shows also that year in Sydney. The last time The Hummingbirds played was in July 2016 at the Newtown Social Club in Sydney.

Simon was 55 years old.
