Sam Smith is ‘very upset to announce’ he’ll need to undergo surgery.

The 22-year-old star was forced to cancel the remaining dates on his tour in Australia, Japan and Manila due to a vocal cord haemorrhage.

Although doctors initially advised him to rest his voice in an attempt to allow the ailment to heal on its own, Sam has confirmed he’ll now need to undergo surgery to repair the damage.

‘Dear All: I am very upset to announce I have been battling to get my vocal cords better the last 10 days but unfortunately they haven’t recovered and I am going to need surgery,’ he wrote in a typed-out meme posted on Instagram Thursday May 7.

‘I’m so gutted to be missing all the shows and events I was meant to be playing at. The doctors say I will be back in 6-8 weeks and I cannot wait to sing for you all soon.’

Sam confessed in the caption to the meme he is extremely anxious about going under the knife.

The Stay with Me hitmaker is also shuddering over the need for complete silence as his vocal cords recover from the procedure.

‘Bad news. I have my operation booked for next week, so getting really nervous,’ he wrote in the Instagram caption, attaching emojis featuring tears and a surgical mask. ‘But by doing this in 8 weeks time I’m gonna be able to sing like never before so it’s worth it. I am so sorry to all. Dreading the next month thou, I can’t speak for THREE WEEKS after the op (sic).’
