Seven Network Betoota’d in Tame Impala cricket stuff-up

The Seven Network has once again demonstrated that its newsroom looks like it is run by school children by reporting a satire piece as real news.

Comedy site The Betoota Advocate published a joke piece about Australian cricketer Cameron Bancroft returning to Perth band Tame Impala as their Kazoo player. Bancroft was banned from playing in the sport for nine-months over the ball-tampering incident in South Africa.

On Wednesday night 7’s cricket commentators talked about Bancroft and referenced the comedy comment as fact.

The Beetoota Advocate ran the piece in April, 2018.

The satire page read, “It was noted by a number of music journalists when Bancroft’s departed the project in 2011 to focus on his budding cricket career, Tame Impala’s sound noticeably changed from a traditional psychedelic jam band to a more vaporwave Beach Boys type of vibe.

“The reasoning behind this, according to the band’s bedroom composer Kevin Parker, is because the band lost the most talented kazoo player to emerge from Western Australia in recent memory.

The site also ran a fake quote from Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker. “We were pretty kazoo-heavy those days. Some nights, we used to let Cameron solo for like 20 minutes. It was a crazy time. The mining boom, the jetski boom. Troy Buswell was still our treasurer. I miss those days sometimes, other times, I don’t”.

Bancroft has recently returned to the game after his ban. It should be noted that Channel Seven was also one of the networks that ran the unconfirmed reported of Olivia Newton-John’s imminent demise as fact this week as well.
