There have been many a shake-up over the last few weeks on the ARIA Charts, with Coldplay, then Florence + The Machine, then Susan Boyle claiming the top spot.

Boyle’s Someone To Watch Over Me held the top spot this week in a mostly unchanged top ten, apart from the + album rocketing into the number eight spot for UK folkie lad Ed Sheeran, from 21.

The highest new entry of the week was baffling: US heavy rock stalwarts Disturbed debuted at number 12 with a b-sides compilation.

Tim Freedman of The Whitlams come it at 19 with his solo debut Australian Idle and Sydney’s indie-funk party band Bluejuice’s Company hit 23.

Glee’s Christmas album could only manage 28, and Seal’s Soul 2 cover album scraped in at 42 (his first Soul album peaked at 12 in 2008 and went Gold).

Both of Susan Boyle’s other albums re-entered the charts – I Dreamed A Dream at 29 and The Gift at 48. Stevie Nicks’ Best Of also came back in at 44 on the back of her visit.

LMFAO hold onto the number one single position with ‘Sexy And I Know It’.

Why Streaming Charts Cannot Be Compared To The Physical Sales Era

by Paul Cashmere The modern music charts used by ARIA, Billboard and the UK's Official Charts Company now measure an entirely different form of consumer behaviour than the charts of the vinyl, cassette and CD eras. While chart headlines frequently compare contemporary streaming milestones with historical sales achievements, industry analysts increasingly acknowledge that the two systems are built on fundamentally incompatible metrics.
