The Avalanches have released ‘Far Away’, their new collaboration with John Glacier and Tunisian producer Khadija Al Hanafi, as the fifth preview of their fourth studio album, No Bad Memories, due October 16, 2026. The release also puts further attention on an unusually broad list of collaborators assembled for the album, including Faith No More’s Mike Patton, Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo and Carly Simon.
‘Far Away’ follows ‘Can’t Get Over Losing You’ featuring Portraits Of Tracy, ‘Blue Shadows’ featuring Karen O, ‘Every Single Weekend’ with Jamie xx and ‘Together’ featuring Nikki Nair, Jessy Lanza and Prentiss.
The new song is accompanied by footage shot in Tokyo and Minakami, Japan, in December 2025 using a 2001 Sony Handycam and MiniDV PAL tape. The video documents a pre-production road trip and recording sessions and uses a recording format that is now largely obsolete.
The Avalanches said they worked with John Glacier during a London summer and described ‘Far Away’ as capturing a “blissed out lysergic feeling” connected to evening light, music and friendship.
Robbie Chater has singled out Khadija Al Hanafi’s contribution to the album. Based in Tunis, Al Hanafi is known for experimental footwork that draws from jazz, R&B and club music. Chater said her approach to manipulating samples “re-inspired” him during the making of the record.
The collaborators on No Bad Memories extend well beyond the artists already heard on the five preview tracks. Mike Patton appears on three songs, ‘Paradise Island’ with Khadija Al Hanafi, ‘Superfun!™ TV Spot’ with Haley Joel Osment, and ‘Total Recall’. Patton also features on the digital-exclusive ‘Superfun!™ TV Spot’ alongside Osment.
Rivers Cuomo appears on ‘All The Time In The World’, alongside Vegyn and Baby Marlboro. The collaboration brings the Weezer frontman into The Avalanches’ sample-driven world, adding another established songwriter to an album deliberately constructed around different musical voices.
Carly Simon has a particularly distinctive place in the tracklisting, appearing on ‘One More Fantasy’. Her contribution sits among collaborations with artists from electronic music, hip-hop, experimental music and alternative rock.
The range of contributors reflects the continuing collaborative approach of The Avalanches, whose catalogue has consistently placed sampling and guest performances at the centre of their creative process. No Bad Memories also includes Ryoji Ikeda, Panda Bear, Haruomi Hosono, Suzanne Ciani, Barry Can’t Swim, Erick the Architect and Loaded Honey.
The album is the follow-up to 2020’s We Will Always Love You. The Avalanches began their recording career with Since I Left You in 2000, a sample-heavy debut that established the Melbourne group internationally. Wildflower followed in 2016, while their 2020 album expanded their use of vocal collaborators and electronic production.
The Avalanches are Robbie Chater, Tony Di Blasi and Andy Szekeres. Their catalogue has continued to connect electronic music, hip-hop, pop and archival samples, with the group also appearing on Jamie xx’s 2024 album In Waves for ‘All You Children’.
The new album contains 31 tracks, although the digital and physical editions differ. Digital variants include several tracks marked as exclusive, while vinyl, CD and cassette editions contain ‘Evergreen Altar’ featuring Vegyn.
The group has also remained active on stage in 2026, performing at Primavera Sound Barcelona and playing their first concert in Mexico. New York and London dates have been announced, alongside further European DJ appearances.
For The Avalanches, ‘Far Away’ provides the immediate focus, but the larger story is the company it keeps. With Mike Patton, Rivers Cuomo and Carly Simon among the guests on No Bad Memories, the October album will add another substantial collection of collaborators to one of Australian music’s most distinctive catalogues.
