The Beatles Restored Yellow Submarine Is Heading To Cinemas

The Beatles’ animated movie Yellow Submarine is about to be resurrected for its 50th anniversary.

An extensive restoration has been done on the film including a clean up of the animation frame-by-frame by hand, skipping the normal digital cleanup used so often today. The movie will also be remastered in 4k digital resolution while the soundtrack will be remixed to 5.1 stereo sound at Abbey Road Studios.

Tickets go on sale on April 17 for showings in the U.S., Canada and U.K. that will start on July 8.

Originally released on July 17, 1968, the film had the look of pop artist Peter Max but was, in fact, designed by the art director Heinz Edelmann.

The Beatles appeared in the final scene of the film and, of course, performed the music, but that was their only involvement. The voices of their characters in the film were actually done by voice actors.

The title song from the film had originally been released two years earlier and “Baby, You’re a Rich Man” had been the B-side of the “All You Need is Love” single while four “new” songs were also included in the film, “All Together Now”, “It’s All Too Much”, “Hey Bulldog” and “Only a Northern Song”.

Here is the trailer for the new edition of the film.
