The Killers Make Political Statement Via Midnight Oil Song At AFL Grand Final

Australia’s favourite homophobe ex-PM was yelling at clouds over Macklemore this week telling the world sports shouldn’t be political and totally missed the slap down from The Killers going full-tilt political with a cover of Midnight Oil’s Forgotten Years.

The Oils classic is a venom-fuelled anti-British anthem speaking to the atrocities of the empire against Australia’s indigenous people.

“Our shoreline was never invaded, our country was never in flames
This is the calm we breathe, this is a feeling too strong to contain
Still it aches like tetanus, it reeks of politics
Signatures stained with tears, who can remember
We’ve got to remember”

The Killers gave the Melbourne audience at six-song set.

When You Were Young (from Sam’s Town, 2006)
Somebody Told Me (from Hot Fuss, 2004)
The Man (from Wonderful Wonderful, 2017)
Forgotten Years (Midnight Oil cover)
Read My Mind (from Hot Fuss, 2004)
Mr Brightside (from Hot Fuss, 2004)

Last night they performed a show at the 250 capacity Howler venue in Melbourne.

The Man (from Wonderful Wonderful, 2017)
Run For Cover (from Wonderful Wonderful, 2017)
Somebody Told Me (from Hot Fuss, 2004)
Spaceman (from Day & Age, 2008)
Smile Like You Mean It (from Hot Fuss, 2004)
Human (from Day & Age, 2008)
Read My Mind (from Hot Fuss, 2004)
All The Things That I’ve Done (from Hot Fuss, 2004)
When You Were Young (from Sam’s Town, 2006)
Mr Brightside (from Hot Fuss, 2004)

The band will return for a free show for Melbourne tonight (Saturday, 30 September) at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
