Paul Cashmere visits rehearsals in Melbourne for the Australian premiere of A Beautiful Noise: The Neil Diamond Musical, getting an first look at the production before it opens.
The rehearsal begins with Associate Director Austin Regan introducing ‘Cracklin’ Rosie’, performed by Will Swenson and The Beautiful Noise ensemble, explaining how the song captures the moment Neil Diamond realises he can become more than a Brill Building songwriter and emerge as a global superstar.
Paul then speaks with Musical Supervisor Sonny Paladino, who explains how the creative team selected Neil Diamond’s songs to tell a compelling dramatic story rather than simply present a greatest hits concert. Paladino discusses why classics including Sweet Caroline, Cracklin’ Rosie, America, Song Sung Blue and I Am… I Said are woven throughout the narrative, the decision to frame the story through conversations between an older Neil Diamond and his therapist, and how the production’s ensemble became “the beautiful noise inside Neil Diamond’s head.”
Following a stirring rehearsal performance of ‘Sweet Caroline’, Paul talks with Associate Choreographer Jasmine Lee to discuss the show’s movement and staging. Lee explains how choreography follows Neil Diamond’s personal journey, why storytelling always comes before dance, and how the production transforms familiar songs into emotionally charged theatrical moments.
Rather than being simply a jukebox musical, A Beautiful Noise combines Neil Diamond’s legendary catalogue with an intimate exploration of memory, fame, identity and life beyond the spotlight.
Watch the exclusive rehearsal performances, hear from the American creative team behind the Broadway hit, and discover why A Beautiful Noise has become one of the most acclaimed music theatre productions of recent years as it prepares to open in Australia.
