All Them Witches return with House Of Mirrors, their seventh studio album and first full-length release in six years. In this exclusive Noise11 interview, Ben McLeod and Parks sit down with Paul Cashmere to discuss the album, the band’s musical roots, their recording experiences and the approach that keeps their live performances unpredictable.
The Nashville-based band explains why the gap between Nothing As The Ideal and House Of Mirrors stretched across six years, with the pandemic, postponed touring and a lineup change all contributing to the delay. They also reveal why Eddie Spear was the right producer for the new record, drawing on their previous collaboration on Sleeping Through The War, produced by Dave Cobb.
The conversation explores the band’s decision to open House Of Mirrors with “Red Rocking Chair”, a traditional song given a heavy All Them Witches treatment. Ben and Parks also revisit their eclectic cover versions, including “Born Under A Bad Sign”, Jimi Hendrix’s “Voodoo Child” and Queen and David Bowie’s “Under Pressure”. They explain how an advertising opportunity involving the latter cover taught them a lesson about recording music for commercial campaigns.
One of the interview’s highlights is the band’s experience recording at Abbey Road Studios in London in March 2020, just before the COVID-19 shutdowns. They discuss the reality of working inside the historic studio, walking across the famous Abbey Road crossing every day and narrowly making it home before travel disruptions escalated.
Paul Cashmere also asks how All Them Witches balance new songs with a decade-plus of recorded history when building their live setlists. Ben and Parks explain why they rotate songs, value their returning fans and perform without click tracks or backing tracks. They also discuss the continuing appeal of “When God Comes Back” and the challenge of keeping a live show fresh.
All Them Witches are playing Good Things.
