The Masches – one of Melbourne’s young and emerging young bands – sit down with Noise11’s Paul Cashmere for an in-depth conversation ahead of their performance at the APRA AMCOS Songwriters Live event at The Espy on 23 November 2025. Mischa and Lillian, the band’s two principal songwriters, open up about their creative process, musical influences and the rapidly growing identity of their band.
In this intimate Q&A, the duo talk about outgrowing covers and discovering their own voice as original artists. They discuss writing during a Songmakers program intensive and shaping their newest track in a single after-school session that captured the band’s natural chemistry.
Mischa reveals how her lyrics often arrive unexpectedly – sometimes mid-meal – and how she uses phrasing, tone and vocal range to express emotion. Lillian talks about guitar textures, amp tone and how distortion, crunch and treble translate their emotional landscape into sound. Their opposite approaches – one beginning with melody and lyrics, the other with riffs and chord progressions – highlight the creative balance that drives The Masches.
Influenced by everything from metal to Fontaines D.C. and Mitski, the pair explain how expanding their listening habits has shaped their songwriting. They reflect on how songs often evolve far from their first idea, and how they know a track is complete only when playing it feels right.
The Masches want listeners to walk away feeling inspired, connected and understood – not weighed down, but uplifted. Their bond on stage mirrors their bond off stage, and they hope audiences will feel that energy at The Espy.
Watch the full Q&A to discover the creative heart behind The Masches and their journey as young Australian songwriters.
