AC/DC Australian Coins Sell-Out in One Day

The AC/DC coins out on sale by the Royal Australian Mint on Tuesday 2 October were completely sold out by the following day.

$1.3 million worth of $5 coins at $130 a pop and $450,000 worth of 50c coins at $15 a pop went on sale to mark 45 years of the iconic Sydney band.

Fans were limited to 3 of each coin per customer.

10 of the 50c coins were given a random thunderstuck treatment.

“The experiment was conducted in the Caged Lightning exhibition at Questacon, which produces lightning using a Tesla coil. Ten AC/DC 50 cent pieces, appropriately featuring the famous high voltage logos and design elements from AC/DC albums, were ‘Thunderstruck’ with 3,500,000 volts of lightning,” Royal Australian Mint Chief Executive Officer Ross MacDiarmid stated.

“The Mint thought that such an iconic band deserved high voltage coins and an electrifying launch to match.
“We weren’t sure what effect the lightning would have on the coins, but we discovered that because the coins are such excellent conductors of electricity, the lightning’s mark is only visible under magnification.”

If you missed out on the Australian AC/DC coins, the Cook Islands has a $10 AC/DC coming in November.

You might want to also log on to the Australia Post site and pick yourself up a set of AC/DC stamps.
