Avicii’s father thanked his late son’s fans for their “incomprehensible” support as he accepted an award on the DJ’s behalf on Wednesday (15Aug18).

Avicii, real name Tim Bergling, was found dead in Muscat, Oman on 20 April following an apparent suicide at the age of 28.

On Wednesday, his penultimate single release, Without You, featuring Sandro Cavazza, was voted song of the year by fans at Sweden’s Rockbjornen award ceremony in Stockholm, and the DJ’s father Klas Bergling made his first public appearance since his son’s death to collect the prize.

During his acceptance speech, he thanked Avicii’s fans for the outpouring of support they have given the family since his shocking death.

“I am happy to have been given the opportunity to be here tonight to say thank you for this amazing award that you have rewarded Tim and Sandro and to everyone of you who have voted for Without You, an amazing song,” he said, according to Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet.

“But also, and perhaps foremost, to say thank you for all and every amazing tribute you have given Tim and his music. From all his fans and others, from churches, schools, festivals and so many more. It’s been almost incomprehensible and it has warmed our hearts, all of the family, during this hard time, so again a big thank you to everyone.”

Following his death, the Levels hitmaker’s family issued a statement explaining the issues he had been dealing with.

“He really struggled with thoughts about Meaning, Life, Happiness. He could not go on any longer. He wanted to find peace,” the statement read. “Tim was not made for the business machine he found himself in; he was a sensitive guy who loved his fans but shunned the spotlight. Tim, you will forever be loved and sadly missed. The person you were and your music will keep your memory alive.”

The dance music star was buried during a private ceremony in Stockholm in June.
