Beyoncé, Bublé and Bieber Fly High In Midweek Sales

Beyoncé, Michael Bublé and Justin Bieber are the acts bubbling most this week as the Christmas sales week draws to a close.

As the ARIA charts sales deadline for the week is Thursday midnight, there won’t be too many variations as the sale week is 5 out of 7 days completed.

Over the weekend, “Trumpets” by Jason DeRulo went to No.1, but at the moment, “Happy” by Pharrell Williams is sitting at the top, so it could be a tussle at the top for two acts who have already scored No.1 singles earlier in the year, Jason with “Talk Dirty” and Pharrell on “Get Lucky” with Daft Punk and “Blurred Lines” alongside Robin Thicke.

This means that John Legend and Magic are possibly going to drop from their No.1 and No.2 respective spots from the past couple of weeks, whilst Eminem and Rihanna, Pitbull and Ke$ha, Rudimental, Avicii and Guy Sebastian should all retain their Top 10 placements this week, whilst the tail end of the ten could be completed by either Imagine Dragons with “Demons” or Avicii could jump up from this week No.18 with “Addicted to You”.

“Swing” for Joel Fletcher and Savage climbed to No.23 this week, but it could leap into the Top 15 this coming weekend, and Mariah’s seasonal favorite “All I Want for Christmas is You” might have enough sales behind it to leap from No.40 into the Top 20 this weekend. “Team” by Lorde originally debuted and peaked at No.19, and this week it climbed from 33 to 26, but this coming weekend it might surpass its original chart height and go higher to seventeen or eighteen, whilst MKTO should jump up again and into the Top 25 with “God Only Knows” (TW-32) and Flume and Chet Faker could also be up there too with “Drop the Game” (TW-31).

The recent self-titled album for Beyonce could score its first singles chart entry this week, as “XO” is currently sitting within the Top 30, whilst she is also charting with the tracks “Drunk in Love” featuring Jay-Z (Top 60), “Mine” featuring Drake (Top 70) and “Pretty Hurts” (Top 80).

The second single from the James Blunt album “Moon Landing” entitled “Heart to Heart” could debut within the lower Top 40 this weekend, whilst the new dance track from Tiesto entitled “Red Lights” could land within the forty to fifty section of the chart. Last weeks debut of “Who You Love” (TW-95) for John Mayer and Katy Perry could jump up into the Top 60, and we could see a return of seasonal songs to the charts in the form of Wham! with their December 1984 track “Last Christmas” (Top 60), John Lennon’s 1972 classic “Happy Xmas (War is Over)” (Top 80) and another 1984 track, Band Aid with “Do They Know it’s Christmas” (Top 90), whilst Michael Buble could possibly enter with “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot like Christmas”.

Justin Bieber is set to chart with his compile album of the tracks he released over the past three months called “Journals”, and potentially charting from the album could be the tracks “Backpack” featuring Lil’ Wayne”, and possibly another song; “Memphis” which has Big Sean and Diplo as guest rappers on the track.

Albums: It’s the same struggle at the top of the Australian albums chart this week, between Michael Buble and Beyonce, and as Michael’s seasonal set would be more relevant to purchase this week, he might just retain the top spot, although Beyonce released the physical edition of the album just in time for Christmas, so it’s a close race.

Justin Bieber could debut within the Top 5 this coming weekend with the compendium album “Journals”, (even though it wasn’t on Universal’s release schedule) it contains all of the tracks he released over the past ten successive weeks, and could be the only high flying debut for the week, whilst Lorde, Eminem, Twelfth Man, Human Nature, One Direction and Katy Perry should retain their Top 10 status this week.

It will also be a week when Christmas albums might climb or retain their placings, which means the following week we will see a mass exodus of seasonal albums, pushing older albums back up. So expect to see Susan Boyle, Kelly Clarkson and Mariah Carey either climb or hold this week, along with the Marina Prior and Anthony Callea’s collections.

Why Streaming Charts Cannot Be Compared To The Physical Sales Era

by Paul Cashmere The modern music charts used by ARIA, Billboard and the UK's Official Charts Company now measure an entirely different form of consumer behaviour than the charts of the vinyl, cassette and CD eras. While chart headlines frequently compare contemporary streaming milestones with historical sales achievements, industry analysts increasingly acknowledge that the two systems are built on fundamentally incompatible metrics.
