Bohemian Rhapsody Opens In China With All Gay References Removed

by Paul Cashmere on March 28, 2019

in News

Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody biopic have opened in China with all Gay and Bisexual references removed.

In the Chinese version of the film the dialogue where Freddie tells Mary he is Bisexual and she says he is Gay have been taken out. Freddie’s discussion with Jim Hutton has been edited out and the scene where Freddie tells the band he has AIDS has been shortened to him just being sick.

Critics in China say Bohemian Rhapsody is now so heavily edited that the storyline no longer makes sense.

China does not see Freddie grabbing Jim’s crotch, the scene where Freddie kisses Jim has been cut and so has the scene about the music video for ‘I Want To Break Free’ which features the band in drag.

Editing sexuality from a movie is not new for China. Ang Lee’s ‘Brokeback Mountain’ has never screened in the country and is still banned.

Bohemian Rhapsody could be considered an Art House release in China. It has an extremely limited release.
