Christmas Day, it is the day James Brown died.

James Brown, the Godfather of Soul, died on Christmas Day 2006.

Brown’s death at age 73 came as a surprise. He had been working non-stop for more than 50 years so there was no indication he was ill.

On December 23, 2006 James Brown had a dentist appointment. He arrived late and appeared dazed. His dentist advised he see a doctor immediately.

Brown checked into Emory Crawford Long Memorial Hospital in Atlanta the following day. He had a noisy cough since returning from his European tour. As Brown hardly even stopped working, even when he was sick, it wasn’t something that seemed extraordinary to the people around him.

On Christmas Eve 2006, the condition of the soul superstar deteriorated. At 1:45am on Christmas morning 2006 he died from congestive heart failure resulting from complications from pneumonia. His final words were “I’m going away tonight’.

James Brown was born in Barnwell, South Carolina on May 3, 1933. His career spanned six decades. His greatest hits include ‘Papa’s Got A Brand New Bag’, ‘I Got You (I Feel Good)’, ‘It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World’, ‘Say It Loud I’m Black and I’m Proud’, ‘Get Up (I Feel Like A) Sex Machine’ and ‘Living In America’.
