Gary Oldman and other friends of David Bowie are to celebrate the late rock icon with a concert in his hometown on his 70th birthday.

Bowie collaborators will perform at the show at the O2 Brixton Academy in South London on 8 January (17).

The rock superstar was born in Brixton before moving to Bromley, a London suburb, as a boy.

The bill for the 70th birthday concert includes Bowie’s close friend Oldman, who gave a moving tribute to the musician at the Brit Awards in February (16).

Others who will perform at the gig include former members of Bowie’s band including, Mike Garson, Earl Slick, Adrian Belew, Mark Plati, Gerry Leonard, Gail Ann Dorsey, Sterling Campbell, Zachary Alford, Holly Palmer and Catherine Russell.

The musicians who worked with Bowie throughout his storied career will be joined by a number of yet to be announced special guests.

Organisers of the Brixton show are planning to stage a number of concerts around the world in places with a connection to Bowie’s life and work, with those who played with the rocker joining local artists.

Future venues have yet to be announced, but places which could be in line for a gig include New York, where Bowie spent the latter part of his life and Berlin where he famously recorded three albums in the 1970s.

Proceeds from the London show will go to the Children & The Arts charity.

There really is a riot going on right now, so what a poignant moment it seems to be to lose a hero I never met, yet a man I often imagined as my soul brother. I worked with many of his alumni (including the man who helped invent him, fellow San Fran disk jockey Tom Donahue), and to say they and he inspired me would be a useless understatement.
