Gwen Stefani Isn’t Listening To The Competition

Singer Gwen Stefani doesn’t care what music is popular at the moment and is solely focused on making an album that is “pure and honest”.

Stefani released the video for her new single Used To Love You on Tuesday (20Oct15) which seemingly hints at the turmoil she’s been going through since announcing her divorce from Gavin Rossdale, her husband of 13 years, in August (15). Her new music is personal and from the heart and Gwen is happy with that regardless of whether it fits with what’s currently doing well in the charts or not.

“All I’m thinking about is that I made a record that is literally pure and honest and reflects exactly that I wanted to reflect,” she confessed to Vulture.com. “I haven’t even considered what’s out there or what’s happening. It’s weird to even think about that right now. I don’t even know what’s out there, I don’t even care. It’s fine. Whatever’s happening, I just want to share the music and feel good about it.”

If the 46-year-old was lacking any confidence about releasing her first solo album since 2006’s The Sweet Escape she was boosted by working with frequent collaborator and fellow The Voice US coach Pharrell Williams. The pair has produced major hits together in the past, including Hollaback Girl and No Doubt’s Hella Good, and Gwen couldn’t be more grateful for their partnership.

“There are so many songs that we’ve done together,” she continued. “They’re not just songs, they’re huge moments. He’s probably my favourite person I’ve ever collaborated with because he’s very saintly, prophetlike.

“He has so much wisdom and so much positive energy and goodness, and he has a way of saying things where he really makes you think. So for me, he was definitely an angel sent to me to make me think. I love him.”
