Devo The Book Is On The Way

The members of Devo are working with Rocket 88 Books for a new illustrated book to tell the forty year history of the band.

D-E-V-O will be the first and only official book to tell the story of the band, the members are promising that it will be packed with unseen images from throughout the years and their story including how they went about building the Devo brand.

The seeds of Devo were developed in the late 60’s when Kent State University students Gerald Casale and Bob Lewis came up with the idea of de-evolution and created satirical art pieces to demonstrate their concept. Casale was also performing in a local bands where he met Mark Mothersbaugh and, later, brought in his brother Bob, Rob Reisman and Fred Weber to form Sextet Devo.

After a number of personnel changes, the band got the attention of David Bowie who helped them get a contract with Warner Music Group. Their first single, Mongoloid / Jocko Homo was released in March 1977 and, in July 1978, the released their debut album Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo! Between 1978 and 1990, the band released a total of eight albums and had hits with Whip It (1980 / #14 Pop / #8 Dance), Working in a Coal Mine (1981 / #43 Pop / #30 Dance), Peek-a-Boo! (1982 / #13 Dance) and That’s Good (1983 / #6 Dance). Their last studio album was 2010’s Something For Everybody.

Gerald Castle said of the new book “Devo was, and is, an adjective, an adverb, a noun, a Gestalt–a unified field concept embracing art, music, politics and fashion with an alternate world view we christened De-evolution. For the first time ever, this book compiles the breadth and depth of our attempts to create something unique against all odds, while fighting the good fight as the world slowly proved that De-evolution is real.”

The band is asking fans to go to the new website for the book and register their interest with the results used to determine the quality they can afford and the number of books that they should have printed. They are projecting that the book will be released in December of this year.
