British songwriter Baxter Dury joins Paul Cashmere this conversation with Noise11 about touring, songwriting and life growing up around music as the son of Ian Dury.
In this interview, Baxter discusses his upcoming return to Australia and what audiences can expect from his shows. While his previous visit was dominated by rainy weather and encounters with Australia’s infamous “bin chickens”, he’s looking forward to returning and playing a new run of concerts starting in Melbourne.
The conversation also dives into Baxter’s lockdown memoir and how the unusual circumstances of the pandemic finally gave him the time and motivation to write it. He explains the difference between writing prose and writing lyrics after decades as a songwriter, describing lyrics as something that “pour out” naturally while writing a book requires far more discipline and structure.
Baxter also reflects on the influence of his legendary father Ian Dury, explaining why he tries to keep a respectful distance when analysing his father’s career and legacy.
The interview covers live performance too, including memories of playing the legendary Glastonbury Festival, the nerves of stepping onto massive stages, and how the energy of live performance differs from the studio recordings.
Baxter also talks about his admiration for Australian music, praising the hunger and ambition of Australian artists and highlighting bands such as Amyl And The Sniffers and Confidence Man who have made an impact internationally.
