Spandau Ballet To Play SXSW

Spandau Ballet will play a show on March 12 at this year’s SXSW in Austin, TX.

It showcase will be the 80s Brit Bands first concert on U.S. soil in 28 years.

Their last shows were in 1986 while promoting their album Through the Barricades, a set that did well in both Europe and Australia but didn’t make a stir the U.S. One last album before their breakup, 1989’s Heart Like a Sky, was not released in America so there was no touring.

The band reunited in 2009, releasing the album Once More; however, a world tour did not include the U.S.

The SXSW appearance coincides with the world premier of their documentary Soul Boys of the Western World at the festival. Guitarist Gary Kemp confirmed a theatrical release and talked about the film:

There will be a theatrical release in the US of Soul Boys of The Western World.

We had the idea because we have a good story and the story has a real arc. It’s about friendship, kids who come from the shadows of the second World War growing up in the ‘60s and ‘70s, a period of great rock music from David Bowie and glam rock. They go through the whole punk experience and then had the experience of the whole New Romantic scene of working class kids dressing up and doing things that were outrageous against a recession.

The film will be screened at SXSW on March 12 at 2 PM with the band playing at the reopening of the Vulcan Gas Company later that night.
