Kylie Minogue’s ‘Step Back In Time: The Definitive Collection’ debuted at number one on the ARIA chart this week because of Vinyl. Despite this being Kylie’s 13th compilation, this was the first time fans could buy all of her hits in one place on vinyl.

Kylie Minogue sold 3,386 copies to score the number one slot. 86 of those were allocated from streaming. (Roughly every 150 listens is now counted as a sale. Yeah, we don’t get it either).

791 of the Kylie sales were purchased digitally (some people still use iTunes) but of the total sales figure 1,443 were sold in Vinyl format.

‘Step Back In Time’ is the first Kylie Greatest Hits album on Vinyl since the first one, ‘Greatest Hits’ in 1992. By the time her second one came out in 2000, Vinyl was obsolete but the title was released then on Cassette.

Kylie’s run of Greatest Hits packages popped out more than Studio albums since 2000. One, a re-recording of her hits as ‘The Abbey Road Sessions’ was released on Vinyl but as it wasn’ the original versions, it wasn’t that popular.

‘Step Back In Time’ sold 1066 CDs last week making the Kylie fan format of choice:

1. Vinyl
2. CD
3. Download
4. Streaming

Last week, media consultant Chris Carey presented his findings into music sales consumption at the CHANGES conference in Melbourne. He concluded that the Physical sale in far from over. Album listening isn’t dead and CDs are still in demand – the album format is still very popular (even for younger people and also amongst the mix of digital streaming playlists and single tracks available)”, he reported.
