X May Re-Open Melbourne’s Gershwin Room

Australian punk pioneers X may be the first act for the Melbourne’s refurbished The Gershwin room.

It’s only a rumour at this stage but the rumour has made it all the way to X singer Steve Lucas.

Lucas said in a Facebook post, “Heard an interesting rumour that X will be reopening the Gershwin Room in the iconic Esplanade Hotel. Wouldn’t that be nice? My understanding is it will be in two weeks time just a few days after my 60th. Interesting, very interesting….”

Lucas formed X in 1977. While the band only released one album ‘X-Aspirations’ before first breaking up, they left a blueprint for what was to come from punk in Australia.

X is now Lucas with Kim Volkman and Doug Falconer.

‘X-Asperations’ was recorded in just five hours at Trafalgar in Sydney.

The Gershwin Room is inside Melbourne’s iconic Esplanade Hotel. Paul Kelly recorded his 1995 live album ‘Live at The Continental and The Esplanade’ at the venue. Since 2005, it is also the filming location for RockWiz.

In 2002 when John Farnham was asked why he never plays The Espy he response was “because I have never been asked.” They asked, he did.
