Amy Winehouse, Nina Simone and Laurie Anderson documentaries have been nominated for the Academy Award.

Three years ago, the Oscar for Best Feature Documentary went to Searching For Sugar Man, the story of the search for 1970’s singer/songwriter Sixto Rodriguez. The film revived the singer’s career and interest in his two studio albums, Cold Fact (1970) and Coming From Reality (1971).

The next year, the award went to Twenty Feet From Stardom, which highlighted the careers of backup singers such as Merry Clayton, Darlene Love, Judith Hill and Tata Vega.

For the 88th annual awards, three music documentaries have made the short list of fifteen films that will eventually be paired down to five final nominees:

What Happened Miss Simone? – The story of iconic singer Nina Simone as told through interviews with her daughter and friends.

Heart of a Dog – Laurie Anderson’s remembrance of her rat-terrier Lolabelle.

Amy – The life and death of singer Amy Winehouse.

The final five nominees will be announced on January 14 with the award presented at the February 28 Oscar ceremony.
