Boy George Says He No Longer Has Relationships

Boy George finds happiness an interesting challenge.

The Culture Club singer has had a tumultuous love life over the years including an intense relationship with band mate Jon Moss and a stint in jail after falsely imprisoning a male escort. But the 54-year-old leads a much more sedate life now, partly because romance doesn’t feature too heavily in it.

‘I don’t really have relationships anymore, so I don’t really have anything to write about in that department,’ he told DuJour magazine. ‘I’m happy, and that’s an interesting challenge. I’m not saying I lived my whole life being unhappy, but I always used to draw on drama to write. So my process has broadened out now. I read a lot, and I use a lot of the things I need. I try to find other ways of coming up with a subject.’

Thankfully inspiration did come to him and the band is back with a new album, Tribes. The singer feels like the record reflects his new outlook on life, and relationships.

‘They’re very different now when I have them. They’re not claustrophobic. They’re not needy. In fact sometimes I think something is wrong with me because I am not obsessive like I used to be,’ he confessed. ‘But I can’t bear the thought of ever feeling like that again, even though I got great songs out of it. I just can’t think of anything more hideous.’

In fact, Boy George doesn’t find human emotions that enthralling at all any more when it comes to songwriting.

‘There are so many songs that have been written about love,’ he added. ‘I think human emotions, especially when it comes to relationships, are not that unique. What can I add?’
