Disturbed Don’t Cover Anyone On Evolution On Purpose

Disturbed fans who are expecting a cover on their new album ‘Evolution’ are in for a surprise. There isn’t one.

Disturbed have included covers on nearly every album dating back to the debut ‘The Sickness’ in 2000. That album had their version of Tears for Fears ‘Shout’. Subsequent releases have had Genesis ‘Land of Confusion’ (Ten Thousand Fists, 2005), Faith No More’s ‘Midlife Crisis’ (Indestructible, 2008), U2’s ‘I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For’ (Asylum, 2010) and Simon & Garfunkel’s ‘The Sound of Silence’ (Immortalized, 2015).

David Draiman tells Noise11 there are no covers “On purpose, because coming off the last record and all the success that be graciously achieved with our cover of ‘The Sound of Silence’ we figured that the very first thing that the person turned on would do looking at the next Disturbed record was to look for a cover”.

“That was the last thing we wanted people to do,” he said. “That song was lightning in a bottle, a miracle. To expect to recreate that or to be held accountable to that was a silly game to play and I didn’t want to entertain it. We decided to let people have that effect this time with one of our own”.

While there might not be another Genesis cover on ‘Evolution’, there is a Genesis sound on ‘Watch You Burn’. “It’s like Peter Gabriel era Genesis. To me that’s what it feels like,” David tells Noise11. “It definitely came from a purely improvisational spot. It came out of nowhere. Danny had the progression, I came up with the melody. With that ultra-proggy breakdown that happens in the bridge and all the dynamics in the song, it is very, very unique. It speaks about the mythology of fame. The myth that Hollywood promises, entertainment in general, the trappings of the same people feeding you the same bullshit”.

Much of ‘Evolution’ reflects association with death, in particular the death Chris Cornell and Chester Bennington. “I am sure you are seeing themes that are reflected on several times and loss and death are reflected,” David said. “Hold On To Memories is trying to come at it from a positive perspective. It is about encouraging you to live in the moment and seize the day and make sure that you make the most of the time you have with the ones you love because it is fleeting and it is incredibly precious”.

‘Evolution’, the 7th Disturbed album will be released on 19 October 2018.
