The New Zealand seven-piece will return to the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne with special guests Sub-Tribe and PANIA for an outdoor concert celebrating their distinctive fusion of dub, reggae, soul and electronic music.
Fat Freddy’s Drop will return to Melbourne for a one-off Live At The Gardens concert at the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne on Thursday 4 March 2027, joined by special guests Sub-Tribe and PANIA. The New Zealand band will bring their improvisational approach to one of Melbourne’s most distinctive outdoor concert settings, drawing on a catalogue that spans more than two decades.
Formed in Wellington in 1999, Fat Freddy’s Drop developed from the city’s underground dance music scene into an internationally touring act. Their sound brings together reggae, dub, soul, jazz, rhythm and blues and electronic music, with extended live arrangements giving their songs a different character from their studio recordings.
The group built its reputation through performances that allow room for improvisation, with rhythm sections, horns, keyboards and Dallas Tamaira’s vocals combining in a fluid, dance-oriented sound. Rather than treating their albums as fixed blueprints, Fat Freddy’s Drop have frequently developed and refined material through years of playing it on stage.
Saxophonist Scott Towers, known to fans as Chopper Reeds, says the Melbourne concert will reconnect the band with the dancefloor roots that helped shape its music.
“Freddy’s has always been about bringing the party,” the band said in the announcement. “We’ve continually developed and refined our music over the years, but we started playing together at dance parties and we keep coming back to those roots, to the dancefloor vibes.”
The group also confirmed that the set will draw from across its catalogue, including its breakthrough album Based On A True Story, 2015’s Bays and Blackbird, released in 2013.
Based On A True Story established Fat Freddy’s Drop as a major force in New Zealand music when it topped the country’s album chart in 2005. The independently released record featured songs that had evolved through the band’s live performances, a process that remains central to its musical identity.
The band has continued to release new music, with SLO MO, its sixth studio album, released in October 2024. Its catalogue reflects a continuing interest in combining live instrumentation with electronic production and deep, unhurried grooves.
The Melbourne announcement follows the group’s sold-out shows celebrating the 21st anniversary of Based On A True Story, including three sold-out performances at The Forum in March 2026. The Live At The Gardens appearance offers another opportunity for Victorian audiences to see the band in a large outdoor environment.
Joining Fat Freddy’s Drop will be Sydney-based seven-piece Sub-Tribe, whose members have roots in Aotearoa. The group blends dub, reggae, blues, jazz-hop, dancehall, jungle and drum and bass, building its sound around heavy bass, electronic rhythms and layered harmonies.
Australian R&B artist PANIA completes the bill. She released her debut single, ‘ICCY’, in 2021, followed by ‘tiki’ in 2022. Since then, she has supported international artists including Kehlani, RAYE, Giveon and Coldplay, building a profile within Australia’s contemporary R&B scene. Her forthcoming EP, Coming 2 Terms, is scheduled for release later in 2026.
The three-act lineup brings together Fat Freddy’s Drop’s established live sound with two acts drawing on contemporary approaches to bass music, electronic production and R&B.
