Before 1975, Fleetwood Mac was a well regarded but a bit of a niche band in the United States, never charting higher than number 34 (they had three top ten albums in the U.K.) and being best known for tracks like “Oh Well” and “Hypnotized”.

Then, Bob Welch, who had been a driving force in the band since 1971, decided to leave and Mick Fleetwood went on the hunt for a suitable replacement, initially settling on guitarist Lindsey Buckingham; however, Lindsey was only interested if his girlfriend and recording partner, Stevie Nicks, was also brought in.

The new configuration of Fleetwood Mac went in the studio in the first two months of 1975 and recorded their first set. Fleetwood Mac was released in July of 1975 and, a year later, went on to become a major hit, hitting number 1 and staying in the top ten for 37 weeks.

On January 19, Rhino and Warner Brothers will release a new version of the album in a variety of formats that expands on both the original and the 2004 deluxe edition. Disc 1 of the set includes the original album along with three single mixes of songs and the track “Blue Letter” which was the b-side of “Warm Ways” in the U.K.

Disc 2 has twelve early working tracks for songs from the album along with a jam and four songs recorded live at the Burbank Studios in January of 1976.

The third disc is fourteen previously released live performances from October of 1975.

The super deluxe version of the album also has a DVD with the 5.1 surround and 24/96 kHz stereo mixes of the album along with single mixes.

An LP of the original album fills out the box set.

For fans of Queen, John Deacon has long been the enigma of the band, a brilliant musician, masterful songwriter, and humble presence behind the scenes. But now, years later, he has quietly resurfaced, lending his signature alongside bandmates Roger Taylor and Brian May on a charity auction item, signalling, perhaps, that even the most private of souls can still make their mark in unexpected ways.
