A slightly tasteless press release reveals that the band’s show at Auckland’s Western Springs Speedway on December 13 was picked up as seismic activity.

Monitoring service GeoNet reported that the force of the moshing was detected between 1.5 and 2 kilometres from the venue.

A record company press release states, “The concert vibrations were recorded as a semi continuous harmonic signal with a peak osculation of 3Hz, i.e. the ground was shaking 3 times per second in a nice rhythmic motion…

“The cause of the shaking is most likely the weight of the 50,000 fans dancing, as 50,000 fans is equal to around 5,000 tonnes of mass moving (or moshing) on the ground for the duration of the concert.”

Before they caused a minor New Zealand earthquake, Foo Fighters did perform a relief gig for the Christchurch quake in Auckland in March this year.
