The Blackhearts Club at the Forum Theatre will become the official bar of the 65th Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF) and it is designing the entertainment to match the movies.

Over the course of MIFF The Blackhearts Club open up the Steinway with a series of performances designed for the star instrument. Melbourne jazz musician Mark Fitzgibbon will be the Club’s piano Player-In-Residence.

A sampling of the events:

Festivities kick off with the MIFF opening party (Friday July 29), with The Drones’ Dan Luscombe swapping out his beloved axe for a rare stint on the keys. He’s followed with DJs sets featuring the far-flung funk of PBS FM’s DJ Manchild and RRR’s master of eclectica Woody McDonald. We are also thrilled to announce that the legendary Mr Ray “I ain’t afraid of no ghost” Parker Jr, special guest of MIFF and original Ghostbusters theme songster, will also joining the line-up for a special one-off guest DJ set.

Performances building out from around the piano will be as varied as Chet Baker inspired jazz from Jane Clifton (Saturday 6 August), glorious harmony from The Dusty Millers (Sunday 31 July), and organic live cut and paste sampling from Albrecht La’Brooy (Sunday August 7). The seven piece J A Z Z P A R T Y will cut loose with two feverish nights of hot-house rhythm, one in tribute to David Lynch (Friday 5 August), and the legendary soul singer Sharon Jones (Friday 12 August).

Other special events include a Gimme Danger afterparty (Saturday July 30), with DJ sets spring boarding in inspiration from Jim Jarmusch’s film about Iggy & The Stooges. For the teens, let your dance freak flag fly with a pop-fuelled afternoon, kicking off with a Bieber “Sorry” inspired dance workshop with Amrita Hepi, and a disco hosted by DJ Baby Bonus (aka renowned Rookie writer Brodie Lancaster), celebrating the screening of soon-to-be cult-classic Girl Asleep (Sunday 7 August) and of course, the annual 3RRR broadcast live from The Blackhearts Club.

Ahead of the screening of Italian film-noir Suburra (Wednesday 10 August), DOC Gastronomia will wet your whistle with an ‘Aperitivo’ night, celebrating the very best in Italian eating and drinking from 5:30pm. Blackhearts & Sparrows flex their viticultural muscles with Wine Down (Saturday 13 August from): post the screening of Sour Grapes, they’ve enlisted 3RRR’s Cam Smith to lead a panel of celebrated wine experts to discuss the Australian wine industry, from grape to glass. Following the panel, Blackhearts & Sparrows have assembled a tasting with local winemakers who share Blackhearts’ belief in farming and winemaking with integrity.
