Melbourne International Film Festival has announced the nominees for its 2026 awards, with more than $300,000 in prize money to be presented across feature films, Australian directing, First Nations screen creatives, youth programming and short filmmaking.

Australian music will take a prominent place in the Melbourne International Film Festival's first reveal for 2026, with the world premiere of Jebediah: Are We OK? and the Australian screening of The Best Summer emerging as two of the standout music titles in the festival's opening announcement. The films revisit pivotal moments in alternative music culture, one through the story of a Perth band that survived three decades together, the other through newly discovered footage from one of Australia's most significant music festivals of the 1990s.

Movies about Jimmy Barnes, Jeff Buckley and Butthole Surfers will be featured at the 2025 Melbourne Internation Film Festival.

The Marlon Williams documentary ‘Marlon Williams: Two Worlds – Ngā Ao E Rua’ will premiere at the Melbourne International Film Festival in August.

‘Ellis Park’ was made as a documentary to showcase the Ellis Park animal sanctuary in Sumatra but it also platforms three sides to a remarkable Australian musician Warren Ellis (The Dirty Three, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds).

‘Fungi: Web of Life’, an Australian film about the work of Dr Merlin Sheldrake and narrated by Björk, will screen at the Melbourne International Film Festival in August.

‘Ellis Park’, a movie by Justin Kurzel about Warren Ellis of The Bad Seeds and The Dirty Three, will premiere at the 2024 Melbourne International Film Festival.
