Prince Protégé Shelby J To Perform Residency At Melbourne’s Bird’s Basement

Shelby J, a singer with Prince’s band The NPG, will make Melbourne jazz club Bird’s Basement her musical home for a week in May.

Shelby has her own band The Black Gypsies and she has also been a member of D’Angelo’s band The Soultronics.

In 2006 Shelby was performing with Larry Graham in Las Vegas as part of the Prince 3121 shows. Prince saw her, liked her and asked her to join The NPG.

She sings on the Prince albums ‘Planet Earth’ (2007), ‘Indigo Nights’ (2008), ‘Lotusflow3r’ (2009) and ‘20TEN’ (2010).

Shelby also co-wrote the song ‘North Carolina’ with Prince who also produced the song for her debut album.

Shelby J can be seen at Bird’s Basement from May 16 to 21, 2017.
