US powerpop guitarist Tommy Keene has died at the age of 59.

A short statement at Keene’s website states, Tommy passed unexpectedly and peacefully in his sleep. Thank you to all his friends and family who he loved very much. xo Matty

Keene hailed from Washington, DC. His debut E.P. ‘Places That Are Gone’. It became the template for his career.

Keene’s second album ‘Songs From The Film’ became his first major label release for Geffen in 1986. The album featured production from T-Bone Burnett, Geoff Emerick and Bob Clearmountain.

His next album ‘Based On Happy Times’, again for Geffen, featured guest appearances from Peter Buck and Jules Shear.

Tommy Keene continued to make albums through the 90s and up to 2015 when he released his last album ‘Laugh In The Dark’.

Tommy Keene played his last show on September 24, 2017 in South Orange, New Jersey opening for Matthew Sweet.
