Uli Jon Roth is a pioneering German guitarist and composer best known for his work with the Scorpions and as a trailblazer in neo-classical metal. Born on December 18, 1954, in Düsseldorf, Roth rose to prominence in the early 1970s when he joined the Scorpions, contributing to four influential albums between 1974 and 1978, including In Trance and Taken by Force. His virtuosic, Hendrix-inspired playing and classical influences helped shape the band’s early heavy metal sound.
After leaving the Scorpions in 1978, Roth formed Electric Sun, a band that showcased his evolving interest in blending classical music with rock. As his career progressed, he developed a unique musical philosophy called “Sky Guitar,” also the name of the custom instrument he created to expand the guitar’s tonal range.
In the 1990s and 2000s, Roth focused more on classical compositions and orchestral projects, including his Metamorphosis of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. He also became a mentor and teacher, conducting Sky Academy guitar workshops.
Roth remains a respected figure in rock and classical circles for his spiritual approach to music and his innovations in guitar technique. His Scorpions Revisited album (2015) paid tribute to his early work, reconnecting fans with the roots of his legacy.
