Snoop Dogg Will Boycott The Oscars

Snoop Dogg is the latest star to boycott the Oscars.

The US rapper took to social media to express his disgust that no black actors or directors have been nominated for a prestigious golden statuette. He follows in the footsteps of Jada Pinkett Smith and Spike Lee, who have both publicly stated they are not supporting the 2016 Academy Awards.

“Somebody asked me whether I’m going to watch the motherfucking Oscars – fuck no!” Snoop ranted. “Why am I going to watch that bullshit for? They ain’t got no niggers nominated. All these great movies and all this great shit you keep stealing from us. Fuck you!”

It was widely thought that Jada’s husband Will Smith would land a best actor nomination for his turn in Concussion, the real life tale of Dr. Bennet Omalu’s discovery of sports-related brain trauma in football players. Will did receive a Golden Globe nomination, but was missed off the Oscars shortlist.

British actor Idris Elba has also been speaking about the issue of race, revealing on Monday (18Jan16) that the problem extends right across the pond. He addressed the British Parliament, telling them that greater diversity is needed in media – both in front of and behind the camera.

“We need to counter what everybody has, see the lay of the land and see who has which careers in TV,” Idris said, reports the BBC. “Who makes TV, and who is allowed on TV and when they get the opportunity which roles do they play, on and off screen.”

Actor Cuba Gooding Jr. shared his thoughts on the matter too, revealing he hopes the controversy will force voters to think harder next year.

The Oscars will take place on February 28 (16).
