Kris Kristofferson, The Palais Melbourne, April 8, 2014 REVIEW

When you see a 77-year old legend like Kris Kristofferson perform live you wonder if this will be the last chance you get to hear the songs from their creator.

Kristofferson is in good shape and could easily go another decade. Then again he doesn’t have to and that his age coming to Australia for such a long tour would challenge most men half his age.

A 20-date tour with a 35-song set shows incredible stamina

While the term is misused often, Kris Kristofferson deserves to be call a “legend”.

Songs like ‘Me and Bobby McGee’, ‘Help Me Make It Through The Night’, ‘For The Good Times’ and ‘Sunday Morning Coming Down’ are some of the finest musical moments in music history.

Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson are just some of the other legends who have recorded his songs.

Over three hours Kris Kristofferson performed songs that made him famous, songs that made others famous and songs that made him proud. He was a man of few words. He doesn’t need to talk much, his songs say it it. Grabbing his handkerchief on a cold, wet Melbourne evening his most profound line of the night was ”Don’t you love paying a lot of money to watch an old fart blow his nose’.

Classics came early with ‘Me And Bobby McGee’ played in the first three songs. Janis Joplin had her biggest hit with the song. Kris gave a nod to Janis mentioning her in the lyrics singing “me and Bobby McGee and Janis”.

Perry Como had the hit with ‘For The Good Times’, Johnny Cash with ‘Sunday Morning Coming Down’ but tonight there were all about their creator Kris.

Kris split the show into two parts and in the second half introduced his daughter Kelly who performed five songs with her dad and then returned for the encore. Whenever Kris decides to retire, the Kristofferson name will continue through Kelly.
