Vinyl music sales in the USA had their two biggest weeks for 2014 around the two Record Store Day events for the year.

For Record Store Day 2014 in April, Nielsen recorded 369,000 vinyl sales and for this past week focused around Black Friday’s Record Store Day II 259,000 vinyl sales were registered.

To put this into an Australian perspective, last week in Australia the Top 500 albums (both physical and digital combined) sold 279,000 copies. America is now selling almost as many albums on vinyl in a given week that Australia is selling in total.

The biggest vinyl release last week as The Beatles ‘Long Tall Sally’ with sales if 5,700. 25 albums sold more than 1,000 copies each compared to this time last year when only seven albums sold over 1,000.

The record industry gets behind Record Store Day in The USA. Australian retailers struggle to get the same level of support from the local record industry.

Exclusives for Record Store Day’s Black Friday sale included The Beatles’ Long Tall Sally, The Grateful Dead’s 11/18/72 Hofheinz Pavilion, Houston TX, Chvrches’ Under the Tide EP, New Order’s 1981-1982, and The Flaming Lips’ Imagene Peise–Atlas Eets Christmas.

Record Store Day Australia 2015 will be held on April 198, 2015.
