The Rolling Stones Play Rarity Loving Cup In Perth

by Paul Cashmere on November 2, 2014

in Live,News

The Rolling Stones dished up an extreme rarity when ‘Loving Cup’ from the 1972 classic album ‘Exile On Main Street’ was given an airing.

The performance was only the 22nd time that The Stones have played the 42-year old song live in concert. They last played it on The Bigger Bang tour of 2006 including twice at the Beacon Theatre in New York for Martin Scorsese’s Shine A Light concert documentary.

Until Saturday night, Loving Cup had never been performed on any of the previous Australian tours of 1972, 1995, 2003 or 2006. “About now, we usually put some songs up online for you to vote for,” Mick Jagger told the audience. “Charlie wanted to do Can’t Get You Out Of My Head, but we scrapped that and instead we’re going to do LOVING CUP”.

‘Loving Cup’ was first recorded in 1969 for ‘Let It Bleed’ but didn’t make the final album. The band re-recorded the song in Los Angeles in December 1971.

The first performance of the song was in Hyde Park. London in 1969. It was only played five times on the 1972 tour and then not again until 2002.
