He has done dates here and there and participated in last year’s Monkees tour, but this is a rare trek from a man whose brilliance is often overshadowed by his 60s TV legacy.

Nesmith opened the tour on Thursday night at the Franklin Theater in Nashville, TN with a 15-song show covered all facets of Nesmith’s career from the opening Papa Gene’s Blues from the Monkees (and the only song from his time in that group) to his last solo album, 2006’s Rays. In-between were five songs from the superb trio of albums that started his solo career (Magnetic South, Loose Salute, Nevada Fighter), the songs that put him at the forefront of the burgeoning video revolution (Rio, Cruisin’) and much from his other solo works.

Main Set

  • Papa Gene’s Blues (from The Monkees, 1966)
  • Propinquity (I’ve Just Begun to Care) (from Nevada Fighter, 1971)
  • Tomorrow and Me (from And the Hits Just Keep On Comin’, 1972)
  • Different Drum (from And the Hits Just Keep On Comin’, 1972)
  • Joanne (from Magnetic South, 1970)
  • Silver Moon (from Loose Salute, 1970)
  • Some of Shelly’s Blues (from Pretty Much Your Standard Ranch Stash, 1973)
  • Rio (from From the Radio Engine to the Photon Wing, 1977)
  • Casablanca Moonlight (from From the Radio Engine to the Photon Wing, 1977)
  • Grand Ennui (from Nevada Fighter, 1971)
  • Cruisin’ (Lucy and Ramona and Sunset Sam) (from Infinite Rider on the Big Dogma, 1979)
  • Rays (from Rays, 2006)
  • Life the Unsuspecting Captive/Marie’s Theme/Lamppost (Closing Theme from The Prison) (from The Prison: A Book With a Soundtrack, 1974)
  • Laugh Kills Lonesome (from …Tropical Campfires…, 1992)

Encore

  • Thanx for the Ride (from Loose Salute, 1970)
