2,386,133 votes have been tallied for the 2017 Triple J Hottest 100 making it the biggest Hottest 100 ever.

Triple J reports that this year’s countdown had 51% female and 48% male while 1% did nor reveal their sex.

2% or roughly 48,000 votes came from outside Australia. 80% of voters were under 30 and the most common age was 21.

The first Triple J Hottest 100 (originally called The Hot 100) was held in 1989. J’s producer at the time Laurie Zion stole the concept from Brisbane community station 4ZZZ. The name was changed to The Hottest 100 in 1991 to avoid legal action from 4ZZZ. The countdown didn’t happen in 1992. It resumed in 1993 with the new name.

The original countdown was conducted by mail. Listeners sent in a list of there 10 favourite songs. From any era. The winner for the first two years was Joy Division ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’.

The first Triple J Hottest 100 CD was released in 1994. That year Denis Leary’s ‘Asshole’ was the number one song.

The first Triple J Hottest 100 DVD was released in 2002. The winner that year was Queens of the Stone Age’s ‘No One Knows’.

Triple J’s Hottest 100 will be broadcast this Sunday at the following times:

12pm – NSW, ACT, VIC + TAS
11:30am – SA
11am – QLD
10.30am – NT
9:00am – WA

At the same time sister station Double J will broadcast the Hottest 100 of 1997.

Leo Sayer Shares His Thoughts on The Passing of Sly Stone

There really is a riot going on right now, so what a poignant moment it seems to be to lose a hero I never met, yet a man I often imagined as my soul brother. I worked with many of his alumni (including the man who helped invent him, fellow San Fran disk jockey Tom Donahue), and to say they and he inspired me would be a useless understatement.
