‘Sexercise – The Musical’ will have its world premiere in Melbourne in February.

The musical has been chosen as the first performance to be staged in Melbourne’s new Alex Theatre, one of three new theatres to be built in the former George Cinema complex in Fitzroy Street, St Kilda.

‘Sexercise’ is based on the cartoon book written by Aleksander Vass. Producer Malcolm Cooke commissioned writer Derek Rowe to create the musical based on the book’s characters and brought in Vass to co-produce the show.

“I invited Alex to co-produce Sexercise – The Musical with me and he not only agreed but built a new theatre in which to properly launch it,” Malcolm Cooke said in a statement. “Alex recognised the need for smaller theatres to create and launch original new works for the commercial theatre, and thanks to him Melbourne will now have the perfect ‘Off Broadway’ theatre complex in The Alex Theatre.”

The story is about the fast-paced world of married professional mid-30s couple Joe (Lyall Brooks) and Sam (Nicole Melloy), who with time for seduction amid the juggling of school runs, work schedules and their personal exercise regimes, discover new ways to connect.

‘Sexercise – The Musical’ features Nicole Melloy as Sam, Lyall Brooks as Joe, Lulu McClatchy as Tania, Fem Belling as Rhonda, Cameron MacDonald as Andy and Kristin Holland as Shane.

‘Sexercise – The Musical’ will open on February 24, 2015 with previews from February 19.
